You said that this is designed to use with only a snaffle, so can I do as you said until while working my horse in the arena and correcting him BUT then put on his regular bit (a mexican bit) when we go on trail? He was used in the mexican rodeos and I rescued him about two years ago. He tends to bob his head and do a few hops when I try stopping him from a trot or lope. I know I’m in my seat, this doesn’t happen with my other horses – just him. So I want to correct that.

Are there any problems with the horse wearing a breastplate while wearing a german martingale at the same time??

I’m from Germany and this isn’t a German Martingale.
This one is called Thiedemann Rein. A Martingale is not fixed at the Reins.

I am able to get my horse to put his head down when I lift my reins, and give him a squeeze, but as soon as I release to him he brings his head up again.
He also has a bad habit of sticking his nose up in the air when I ask him to stop.
It’s hard teaching him other things when I’m still teaching him where I want his head.
This martingale looks like it will be very helpful..
But since my horse already knows to give to the bit, should I not need it?
    Your opinion would be great!

How come this equipment is not suitable for a curb bit with shanks based on leverage?
    Thanks once again Larry///

he did mention briefly, saying you don’t want his nose coming into his chest (hyperflexion)… I don’t think the german martingale would actually have a setting tight enough to create rolkur. the horse in this video was juuuust right 🙂

Mr. Trocha, I have just bought that German Martingale on ebay. My horse shoots his head really high in the air when im trying to get him to stop, then when i open him up he always runs to the left instead of staying straight! Im taking in every tip i can from you! Hope it works & thanks!

I really wish that you would do a short video like this about NOT overflexing these horses. You touched on it here, but there is a LOT of it going on, and I noticed that those that do that on a continual basis, their horses are also constantly ringing their tails.

I use this on my horse, it’s working a treat and he is a completely different horse to ride, i feel so much more incontroll.

    Claire,
I think different strokes for different folks.
It’s all good in the right situation.

I just want to ask also,
What do you think about the Monty Roberts Join Up and the Pat Parelli Horse-Man-Ship Techniques?
Do you think that they are at all beneficial to a horse’s training? or would they be a thing better to do without?

  15. clairebear2296 says:

    Larry,
thanks so much, my horse really didnt understand the point of anything to do with bending his neck, and now he’s finally getting it!!!!
with your tips he’s been improving alot, he’s been responding very quickly, he’s gotten better at his turns, and he’s not running away with me and bucking like he used to. thanks soo much 😀

I am using a german martingale on my 3 year old and it has taught him to flex and bend wonderfully. I was having a problem in his early training of his sticking his nose up in the air and this corrected it in a nice way as he taught himself to bend. Thanks Larry

Straight and to the point is the only way I know.

    I love Larry!!
He thoroughly explains & demonstrates techniques that enables viewers to understand. His newsletters are brilliant – I love the way he says what he means & doesn’t worry about ‘upsetting’ people. I’m tired of people being ‘politically correct’ & afraid of saying the wrong thing. Things need to be said straight so it sinks through some of those skulls – especially when it could save someones life!
Keep it all coming L – I love it! Thank you!!

Larry, as a person that never tried training a green horse before, your videos really help. You are careful to cover reasons why you do what you show and make it easy to follow. I really appreciate your help and making it inexpensive, also
